Step 1 of 2

Flat Roofs

A Hard, Moulded Finish for Roofs with Awkward Shapes

GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic. Rather than arriving as a sheet, a fibreglass roof is made on the roof itself: resin is worked into glass matting laid over a timber deck, and it cures into a solid, continuous layer. A coloured topcoat then goes on to protect the laminate and give the surface its finish. The result is hard enough to walk on and has no laps.

We use Cure It GRP, and it comes into its own where a roof is anything but plain. Balconies, roofs with several upstands, valleys between two flat sections, or a dormer with a lot of edge detail can all be covered without the joins a sheet product would need. Preformed GRP trims give clean, crisp edges that suit modern extensions.

Fibreglass depends on dry conditions and a well-prepared base. We lay new OSB boards to the right fall, tape the board joints, and only start laminating when the weather allows, because damp boards and rain spoil the cure. Corners and upstands are reinforced with extra matting, and the topcoat goes on once the laminate has set.

Pricing

What Affects Your Fibreglass Roof Quote?

No two roofs in Dublin are quite the same, so we price after seeing yours. Below are the four factors that move the figure on your written quote most for this job.

Factor 01

Amount of Detail

Every corner, upstand and outlet needs reinforcing by hand, so a detailed roof takes longer than a plain one of the same size.

Factor 02

Deck Replacement

GRP needs a new, sound OSB deck in most cases, and the area of boarding is a large part of the cost.

Factor 03

Balcony or Walkway Use

If people will use the roof as a terrace, a heavier laminate and extra work at thresholds and doors may be needed.

Factor 04

Trims & Topcoat Colour

The length of edge trims and the topcoat colour you choose both feed into the materials needed.

FAQs

Your Fibreglass Roof Questions Answered

What is a GRP fibreglass roof?

GRP means glass reinforced plastic. Resin is rolled into glass matting over a timber deck, and when it cures it forms a hard, continuous layer with no laps. A coloured topcoat goes over it to protect the laminate. It is formed on the roof itself, which is why it works so well on awkward shapes and balconies.

Can I walk on a fibreglass roof?

Yes, a well-laid GRP roof is hard enough for foot traffic, and that makes it a common choice for balconies and roof terraces. If you plan to use the roof regularly, tell us at the start so we can build the laminate and the details around doors and thresholds with that in mind.

Why does fibreglass need dry weather?

The resin has to cure on a dry deck to bond fully with the glass matting. Rain, heavy dew or damp boards can stop it curing as it should and leave weak spots in the laminate. Because Dublin weather changes quickly, we plan the laminating around forecasts and protect the deck if a shower arrives mid-job.

What decides the price of a fibreglass roof?

The size of the roof matters, but detail matters more: each corner, upstand, outlet and door threshold is reinforced by hand. Most jobs also need a new OSB deck, and a balcony may need a heavier build. Trim lengths and the topcoat colour play a part too. You get a written quote once we have seen the roof.

Can you price a fibreglass roof for me?

Give us a ring, or add your Eircode and a note about the roof to the quote form, for example whether it is a balcony, a dormer or an extension. We arrange to see it, measure up and check the deck, and then send a written quote covering the build.
